JioMeet: UX Design, Interface and Design Psychology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

First of all, I must say its an excellent effort to build a complex product like a video conferencing platform. Made available free for all Indian users. Great thinking Mukesh Ji!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

When I read it on tech crunch “India\u2019s richest man takes on zoom”<\/span><\/a>
(I was like, wow! Finally, someone did it. Obviously, it\u2019s a lot easier for a billionaire like Mukesh Ambani)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like Zoom <\/span><\/a>and Google Meet, JioMeet offers an unlimited number of free calls in high definition (720p) to users and supports as many as 100 participants on a call. And interestingly, it appears to not impose a short time limit on a call\u2019s duration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amazing features, right? <\/em><\/strong>It really<\/em> made me feel proud as an Indian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slowly, I started getting images comparing Jiomeet and Zoom on social media. Surprisingly, it has similar screens, layouts, color schemes and the logo too \ud83d\ude09<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are actual screens \ud83d\ude09<\/span><\/p>\n

I am okay with that. If someone following the trend, understanding the user behaviors, making users not to unlearn, and relearn new stuff, It\u2019s excellent! (Good artists copy, the great steals)<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The best part is it reduces cognitive loading.<\/span><\/h3>\n

What is cognitive load?<\/span><\/h3>\n

Cognitive psychology theory states that people have a limited number of information they can hold in their working memory. There are three types of cognitive load which every design psychologist must consider while designing any product: intrinsic, extraneous, and germane.<\/span><\/p>\n

Intrinsic<\/strong>: The task or information that\u2019s presented brings a level of difficulty in order to comprehend and apply.<\/span><\/p>\n

Extraneous<\/strong>: When too much, irrelevant, or unimportant information is presented, which results in confusion when understanding the content.<\/span><\/p>\n

Germane<\/strong>: Ensures a person can make sense of the information that\u2019s presented and store it in their memory permanently (foster generative processing).<\/span><\/p>\n

But as soon as I started using it, I found the real UX issues.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Obviously apart from this frustrating screen.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Anyone using a product should always be able to determine the answer to all seven questions<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014 Don Norman<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Don Norman, the father of UX, gave 7 basic principles of UX.<\/span><\/h3>\n

It seems like while taking \u2018 INSPIRATION\u2019 from Zoom mobile app design<\/a>; few things are missed out.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

1. Discover-ability :<\/span><\/h3>\n

Norman describes good discover-ability as: \u201cit is<\/em> possible to determine what actions are possible and the current state of the device.\u201d<\/em> Clear focal points (calls to action, images, and headers); visual hierarchy (content structured in order of priority); and obvious navigation systems all constitute good discover-ability and understanding within a design.<\/span><\/p>\n

When a design lacks discover ability, we have to work harder to understand how something works.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the video conference screen, it\u2019s impossible to discover that the Speaker\u2019s thumbnails get bigger after clicking on it.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

( but I discovered it, Thank you )<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

2. Feedback :<\/span><\/h3>\n

Norman describes feedback as \u201csome way of letting you know that the system is working on your request.\u201d <\/em>He also explains that feedback must be immediate, informative, planned (in an unobtrusive manner), and prioritized.<\/span><\/p>\n

Important information should be immediate and clear.<\/span><\/p>\n

Can you guess who\u2019s speaking?<\/span><\/p>\n

(obviously, you can make out from the voice)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

There are other important layout issues too.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Fitts\u2019 Law.<\/span><\/h3>\n

It is faster to hit larger targets closer to you than smaller targets further away from you.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most important navigation bar at the bottom, why is it made smaller and not followed the standard size?<\/span><\/p>\n

Navigation at the bottom is unusually small<\/strong><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Apart from this, there\u2019s no standard grid system<\/strong> used for icons, button size, text, illustrations,<\/strong> etc. design psychologist has not designed  system or a grid system and ‘alignment too’.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

And what is more, there\u2019s no interesting Micro interaction.<\/span><\/p>\n

So there are obviously more points, but I am not a critique. I am just sharing my views (A humble way to say it!)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

We are willing to work with Reliance JioMeet and help them to make a great Indian product that can actually compete Zoom, Microsoft teem, google meet (not just by copying it)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
